Worship & Compassion

Worship: Giving our love to God
Compassion: Giving our love to others

I Fix My Eyes On You

A friend of mine sent me the music and Psalm 27, being one of my favorites, popped in my head. I then just carved out the words in such a way that would fit the music. This is actually how I approach a lot of my songs. I get a melody [most the time it originates with me] and I go to God's word. I usually have a verse running around in my head or heart from my morning devotion with the Lord. I love writing from God's word. It’s like putting a puzzle together, not to mention the truth of it will last forever!

Your Love

Every once in a while I will get a musical idea that just seems fun to play. That is true of this song and like many times before, I just looked for a great psalm to go with it. One thing I like is how the chorus chords and melody cycle in what could feel like an endless way... much like the love of God!

Holy Spirit, Come

I’ve heard it said that the Holy Spirit doesn’t force Himself on anyone, and though He is in us and with us all the time, there is power in humbly inviting His manifest presence into our lives in a fresh way.  This is simply a song of invitation and surrender.

Pass it On

As a parent I have had the joy and privilege of passing on the stories of God's greatness to my own kids – not to mention scores of people in many parts of the world. There is truly no greater joy in life. I have always loved Psalm 145, but one day when I read it, it struck me that one of the most profound ways we can pass on and tell others of God's mighty acts is through worship.

When we stand in our churches – or wherever it may be – and sing songs of praise to God, we are declaring to the person next to us that God is great! One of the greatest reasons why corporate worship is so powerful is because we aren’t only affirming the greatness of God to God AND to ourselves, but to one another. I can’t tell you how many times, though, I was the leader, and someone else in the congregation began leading me as they were perhaps unknowingly passing on the story of the greatness of God in their own lives through their worship!

In the Light of Your Glory

One of the greatest things that happens to us when we worship is that we gain perspective. Our problems and distractions can seem overwhelming until we get a glimpse of the Glory and love of God. Suddenly, like the song says, “all the things that seemed so big, now look so small”.

I experienced this one Sunday morning at my church and later that week wrote this song about it.

I Believe, I Believe

I wrote this song in the midst of another season when I was struggling with my faith. One thing that happens to me when my faith is being rocked is I feel ashamed and that I am the only one who has ever struggled this way. Well, much like my song "Lord, I Believe in You", I wrote this song to help me and others like me boldly proclaim –though sometimes in the midst of the struggle – their faith and hope in Jesus alone!

There is no denying it, WORDS are powerful. James 3:3-6 warns us that what comes out of our mouths can direct our lives. I think they are especially powerful when we declare something in the midst of many people, like in a church service.

The other truth I hope to communicate with this song is how when we choose to believe, we can unexplainably find God's joy and peace. If you think about it, if you compare people who have learned how to live with a simple, child-like faith versus a pessimistic person who seems enjoy doubting, the joy level is a lot higher for the former!

I Have a Hope

I was serving at a church who serves meals to the homeless and was so taken with the hopelessness in their eyes. They looked like they had so given up on life that they were just existing and waiting to die. I thought, Lord, what is it that you would want to say to them? Then I had the thought, I would like to write a song that helps them and other hopeless people like them declare the promises of God over their life. It’s one thing to have someone tell you that there’s hope, it’s another to let words of hope and promise be spoken out of your own mouth with a sense of faith and Gods assurance. After I wrote it I went back and had the privilege of singing it over them.

On a more personal level, when I wrote this song the circumstances of my life were telling me that my ministry influence was only going to be shrinking. I was actually feeling a bit discouraged about this but then God, as if I had nothing to do with writing it, ministered a renewed sense of destiny and hope to me through this song. Interestingly enough, God later opened up the door to work with Maranatha and this ended up being the title cut of my new CD with them.

I Have a Hope CD

I had the privilege of working with producer Ed Cash in Nashville on this record. He is an award-winning and insanely gifted musician, and best of all, a worshiper. My prayer is that this album will help bring a renewed sense of HOPE to your life!

Hallelujah, We Will Sing

For this song, the melody came first and I could tell it was asking for a grandiose kind of theme. I started singing hallelujah on the chorus and thought, what could be a more grandiose theme then the second coming of Christ? When I turned to Revelation 19, I was so exited when I saw the word Hallelujah!  I knew that was it.
Though it is rare, sometimes a melody will come to me and I just ask the Lord, God what is this melody trying to say?  This was one of those times.

One more thought...

Since I was a kid I always loved singing songs about heaven; this is one reason why I always loved the hymns. The mystery and joy found just in the thoughts of hymn lyrics have always captivated me. Like the Word says, “God has set eternity in our hearts" (Ecclesiastes 3:11)

At the end of the day – at the end of our lives – when there are no more answers for tragedies that come, THIS is our final place of comfort and hope... What is it we will be doing in heaven? Worshiping! As a worshiper and worship leader there is the perfect connection with heaven songs because we get to join in with what’s going on up there in the here and now!

We Will Remember

A few years ago I was in a discouraging time in my life. It seemed that my ministry opportunities were shrinking, a couple of friends and relatives I had been praying for had died of cancer, and with the bad back I was suffering from, I was feeling pretty low.

My faith was beat-up and when I looked at the prospects of that particular day and what seemed to be ahead for me, I thought it wasn’t looking good. In the midst of all of this I ran across this verse:

The Israelites became arrogant and stiff-necked, they didn’t remember the miracles God had performed for them and then they wanted to return to their slavery.

Nehemiah 9:16

Suddenly I realized, "Today doesn’t look good, my tomorrow doesn’t seem too promising but I can look back!"  In that moment I very purposely began to remember God's blessings and faithfulness in my life, and sensed both my faith and my joy rising ! It was out this experience I wrote the song "We Will Remember."

I have had the privilege of leading this song in many places... If you think about it, every time we gather and worship, it is like a purposeful trip down memory lane.  We sing of God's mighty acts and His continued grace and work in our lives, and then we sense our hope and faith rising.

We are just like those arrogant, stiff-necked Israelites of old.  We are a forgetful, ungrateful, prone to wander people.  So may we daily recount and remember the goodness of our God this day and everyday!

He Knows My Name

The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.  When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.

John 10:3

The story behind the writing of "He Knows My Name" is one example of what God can do if we will follow through in obedience to Him. My pastor, Mark Pickerill, wrote a sermon of the same name and asked me to write a song to go with it.
In the process, I thought it was turning out to be one of the worst songs I had ever written, but I just went ahead and finished it, knowing the greatest enemy of songwriters is unfinished songs. I also kept going because I had the sense in that moment that this would be a simple act of obedience to God. The inspiring part of the story is the testimonies of people all over the world that have been touched by my feeble little act of finishing what I started.

In 1997, I met a 7 year old orphan in the Philippines named Jerry. Everyday he would ask me, "Tommy, what’s my name?" I have to say, not many people on this earth knew this abandoned, extremely poor boy's name -- but I got to tell him that someone much greater then me did and I got to sing to him and many of his orphan friends this song.

I’ve had the privilege of telling forgotten people in many parts of the world, both rich and poor that God knows them and is calling their name, and what a privilege it has been. I recently re-recorded this latest version with producer Ed Cash and what a blessing it always is to work and worship with such a humble and gifted man. We purposely put children's voices on the new bridge because it echoes the sound of Jerry and the millions of forgotten children in the world who are not forgotten by God! In the end I turned the song into a prayer saying let the abandoned, nameless, friendless and forgotten say... "He knows my name!" There is nothing more powerful then to know and declare that the God of heaven knows us and loves us...

Speak to Me

As I was doing my devotions one morning in 2004, I read the story about God speaking to Samuel.  (1 Samuel 3:1-10.)

The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."

I was so taken with the thought that we usually assume that God isn't speaking, when He actually is. When I read the line "speak, Lord, for your servant is listening," I knew that was my prayer that day and then the song came.

This song has a special place in my heart because it really did turn out to be a sincere prayer that I actually ended up desperately and continually singing to God in regards to a difficult situation I was trying to navigate through. I can honestly say that the Lord spoke in a still small voice and reminded me of some specific promises that I have held on to throughout my life. He really does speak if we’ll just believe and listen!

Do it, Lord

This song is a great statement about how worship, compassion and missions go together. My brother, Dale Walker  once said,

"Worship without compassion will just become ritual and compassion without worship will just become works. "

Worship brings the power of unity like nothing else, so it is powerful when hundreds of people cry out and say, "Let Your kingdom come! Let what's happening in Heaven, happen right here right now on earth!"

In my travels, I have seen more then my share of the injustice in the world, especially as it pertains to the poor. This is part of what gave me the idea to write a song that talked about seeing things in the future and praying them in a prophetic way.

At the end of the day, more than anything this song is actually a prayer of faith, and perhaps "calling things that are not as though they were" (Romans 4:17). Nothing can help communicate a sense of future hope, prayer, and a sense of expectation the way music can.

I sat on this idea for a long time because I just couldn’t figure out how to start. I then emailed the idea to my brother Dale Walker who is a missionary pastor and he sent me several ideas that I then lost for about a year. Eventually I had the song semi-done for about another year until I just decided I must finish it. I guess writing this song felt like unfamiliar territory and a battle within itself. Anyways, it has turned out to be a helpful prayer meeting song and one I hope will spark faith and revival in many places!

And this is eternal life, that they may - know - you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

John 17:3

Reading A.W. Tozer one nightat my friend Jerry's house... It set me on a never-ending, adventurous journey to continually discover and uncover the infinite mysteries of God. I left that experience with a greater sense of longing and wonder... All the true and lasting fruit that will come out of our lives will come from time on our knees.

From Jerusalem

I was in Jerusalem leading 3,000 Christian leaders in worship at a conference. I had such an amazing sense of being separated, only by time, from the first Christians who went from that city to the rest of the world. I wrote this song in the midst of that conference, knowing we would soon leave that place and literally do the same.

Also, there is no denying that Jerusalem is a special place for Christians... Seeing how Jerusalem is symbolic for the presence of God, Christians from where ever they are can say, "From here in the presence of God, Lord, take us to the world!"
